WorkKit Buddy › Linux

For Linux

A desktop pet for Linux, with nothing to sign up for.

WorkKit Buddy wanders your Linux desktop, dances to whatever is playing, brings you reminders and meeting alerts in person and shows what Claude Code is up to. It's one small native app: an AppImage, a .deb or a folder.

Version 1.5 · free · no account · macOS 14+, Windows 10 and 11, Linux

Install it in a minute

AppImage (any distribution, x86-64)

chmod +x WorkKitBuddy-linux-x86_64.AppImage
./WorkKitBuddy-linux-x86_64.AppImage

Or right-click the file › Properties › Permissions › "Allow executing file as program", then double-click it.

Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS

sudo apt install ./workkitbuddy_1.5.0_amd64.deb

Use the _arm64 package on ARM. You get a launcher in your apps menu and workkitbuddy on the command line.

Anything else

Unpack the tar.gz (x86-64 or ARM64) and run ./WorkkitBuddy. To start it with your session, right-click the buddy › Launch at login.

There's no security warning to click through on Linux: the AppImage only needs its executable bit.

What it needs

  • Any distribution, on x86-64 or ARM64.
  • X11, or Wayland with XWayland.
  • For dancing: pulseaudio-utils. Most desktops already have it, and PipeWire counts. There's no permission prompt.

Everything the Mac and Windows versions do

  • 23 characters, or drag any picture onto the buddy and it becomes your character.
  • Dances to your music with real beat detection: Spotify, a browser tab, a game.
  • Reminders and meeting alerts delivered as cards with Open, Snooze and Dismiss. Meetings come from a calendar link you paste in (the private iCal address from Google Calendar or Outlook).
  • Claude Code and Codex reactions: thinking, editing, testing, waiting for you, done. How that works.
  • Focus timer, breaks and stretch nudges, and Ask with your own Claude or Gemini key.

It's built with .NET and Avalonia: one small process, with no web view and no background service. Quit it and it's gone.

Questions

Does it work on Wayland?

Yes, through XWayland, which most Wayland desktops include.

Does it run on ARM, like a Raspberry Pi?

There are ARM64 builds as a .deb and a tar.gz. The AppImage is x86-64 only.

How does it hear the music?

It reads the loudness and beat of what your system is playing through pulseaudio-utils (PipeWire works too), in memory, and throws the audio away as it measures it. Nothing is recorded.

How do I uninstall it?

sudo apt remove workkitbuddy if you used the .deb, or delete the AppImage or the unpacked folder. Your settings are kept unless you delete them.
